MACS Lab Awarded $0.5M from NSF

The MACS Lab, working in collaboration with Dr. Zoubeida Ounaies (https://www.mne.psu.edu/emcl/) was awarded $496K from teh National Science Foundation (https://www.nsf.gov) to develop the science underlying a universal 3D printer. The goal is to find combinations of electromagnetic processing parameters that will cause the electromagnetically-sensitive particles in a curable fluid to line up in proscribed arrangements. These arrangements can be tailored, locally as the material is printed, to promote elastic stiffness or compliance, magnetic or non-magnetic behavior, electrical / thermal conductive or insulation, or a range of other behaviors - all from the same starting constituents. With this technology, designers can dream up nd pprint working electromechanical devices that can be more easily and cheapy fabricated.
