March 2021 - Dr. Niknam Momenzedah, post doc in the MACS Lab, presented his work “Modeling and simulations of a novel magnetorheological peristalsis blood pump,” Proc. SPIE 11588, Behavior and Mechanics of Multifunctional Materials XV. Virtual, 115881L. The simulated blood damage (hemolysis) in a magnetically driven peristalsis pump.
The image below shows how a magnetic flux generator (see the disk below) at the core of the flexible sleeve deforms the sleeve as the field lines shift upward. The constriction applies pressure to blood to propel it forward. The simulations show orders of magnitude less blood damage than in traditional rotary impeller blood pumps.
